Uncorking some New Year's Eve toasts

As the old year shuffles off the 2013 stage and a youngster prepares to take its place, here’s some help with your New Year’s toasts.

Although resolutions are not mandatory New Year’s Eve toasts are as traditional as the champagne, sparkling wine and noisemakers.

Carmen Policy, former president of the San Francisco 49ers and founder of Casa Piena Winery in Napa Valley, offered a perfect phrase:

“Let’s look to the great vintages we shall taste in the future and forget the corked moments we suffered in the past, Happy New Year.”

For those who are not as poetic, you can always claim this traditional Irish toast as your own: “In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, but never in want.”

Korbel Cellars in Guerneville offers a sober salute to the New Year: “Korbel in wants to encourage everyone to toast life and celebrate responsibly.”

Sonia at BevMo in Redwood City will toast family and friends and “wish everyone health and happiness in the New Year.”

Robert Pavy, a neurologist and wine connoisseur in San Carlos, will pair the old and new in his toast.

“We will never forget the old year and we will learn from the lessons of 2014. But, we look forward to the New Year because we know there will be great wines that have aged and ready to be savored.”
