'Uncharted 3' multiplayer goes free to play for 15 levels

Sony and Naughty Dog announced Tuesday that the multiplayer component for "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" is going free-to-play for the PS3.

Playstation 3 owners will be able to download the "Uncharted 3" free-to-play version of the game from the Playstation Store when it updates this afternoon. Players will be able to rank up to level 15 in the free-to-play version. Players will still be able to join matches and gain experience but will not rank up any further unless the unlock is purchased. Once purchased, all previous experience gained will be applied.

Beyond the level cap, other content is blocked off in the free-to-play version of "Uncharted 3" with various items available for purchase in the Playstation Store. This includes various co-op playlists, DLC content and even the ability to play in local split-screen.

This is similar to what Sony did with the "Killzone 3" multiplayer in February of 2012. It cost $15 to move beyond the level cap.

Here's the complete breakdown of what will be available to purchase for "Uncharted 3" free-to-play. Prices for each have not been announced yet. Update: Prices have been revealed and added to the list below.

• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Co-op Adventure Add On ($11.99) – Unlocks Co-Op Adventure mode including the Fort Adventure DLC
• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Co-op Arena Add On ($9.99) – Unlocks to gain access to the Co-Op Arena Playlist including the Co-Op Shade Survival Mode DLC for UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play
• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Competitive MP (No Level Limit) ($19.99) – Removes the level cap for UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play
• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Competitive MP (Level 25 Limit) ($4.99) – Removes the Level 15 cap and allows you to play UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play up to Level 25
• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Split Screen Add On ($1.99) – Unlocks Co-Op Adventure mode including the Fort Adventure DLC
• UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer DLC Map Packs ($24.99) – Unlocks all three DLC map packs released for UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception. Includes Flashback Map Pack 1, Flashback Map Pack 2, and Drake’s Deception Map Pack
• UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Single Player Experience ($29.99) – Uncover the Truth. Unlock the Single Player campaign
