UNCF Black Tie Gala
On December 4th, 2009, the UNCF will be holding its annual Black Tie Gala event at the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston. The night will include a reception to mingle followed by a gourmet dinner and a short presentation. Guests will dance the night away to the sweet tunes of the SOS Band and Klymaxx.
Not only is UNCF offering a night of luxurious fun but also an opportunity to give to a worthy cause. Individual tickets are $350 but will go towards scholarship funds for deserving students.
UNCF executive director Juana Collins further explains, “The event is our signature event that raises money for scholarships and our five Texas colleges: Huston-Tillotson University, Jarvis Christian College, Paul Quinn College, Texas College and Wiley College. Since its inception in 1988 as the event has raised more than $4.5 million. “
UNCF is well-known for its efforts in helping underprivileged students, who without UNCF’s help would not be able to attend college. According to UNCF’s website, sixty percent of UNCF students are the first in their families to attend college and another sixty-two percent are from families with annual income of less than $25,000. Additionally, the organization provides over 400 scholarships, fellowships and institutional grants for students at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
