Uncertain fate leaves the life of German shepherd in danger at county shelter

Meet Louie who is a five-year-old gorgeous brown and black German shepherd scheduled to be euthanized.
Baldwin Park Shelter

Louie is a beautiful German shepherd whose life hangs by a slender thread as he has already been marked to be euthanized at the Baldwin Park Shelter in California.

It's not that Louie is unadoptable; one look at the handsome five-year-old dog sitting in his kennel and wagging his tail enthusiastically lures everyone closer, but then a label that says "Potentially Dangerous" pushes potential adopters to another shelter candidate.

For five years Louie lived with his family, but one day the owner's 19-year-old daughter came for a visit, and as she ran towards her father, Louie thought she was going to harm his human. Tragically, Louie bit the teen.

The next day Louie was surrendered to the shelter. A volunteer states:

"Came in due to a bite of a 19 yr old daughter. Listed as a gentle GSD but was bumped to a Potentially Dangerous Dog disposition because of the bite. He was listed as Approved Partner Rescue Pull only. The pulling rescue must be able to sign an Indemnity Waiver enforced for the lifetime of Louie. $100k insurance and meet all restrictions. His exit date is 2/24 tomorrow. We are requesting an extension and several restrictions to be amended if possible."

And the prerequisites for Louie's release sets the stage for disappointment. Several trainers have been called in by volunteers and humane supporters to evaluate the dog, but the shelter officials, due to liability issues, will not allow Louie to be removed from his kennel.

Training experts agree that Louie most likely needs guidance, structure, and training; the dog's behavior that terrible day was uncharacteristic of his normal, gentle disposition.

Numerous videos of Louie show him to be gentle. Please click here.

Even though Louie's tragic story has been shared nearly 3,200 times, no rescue organization has come forward. Animal advocates feel the criteria for Louie's release is unfair and have started a petition asking the officials at Baldwin Park Shelter to modify the conditions with the following:

  • Grant Louie an extension on his life for another week while volunteers expand their search to find suitable accommodations for Louie
  • Grant the waiver reduced from lifetime to three years
  • Allow a 501c3 rescue organization the right to adopt Louie

The petition entitled Liberating Louie can be accessed by clicking here.

More than a $1,000 has been pledged to help a qualified rescue organization with the expenses for Louie.

Please share Louie's story with your friends, family, and coworkers. For those readers who have a special place in your hearts for German shepherds, please notify your contacts to find any potential, safe home for this beautiful dog.
