The UNCC Botanical Gardens yearly plant sale will take place this weekend, despite a greenhouse fire that damaged one of the greenhouses. Assistant Director Paula Gross released a statement yesterday that one of the eight rooms in the greenhouse was damaged and plants were lost. However, Gross goes on to say, "we will recover".
One of UNCC Botanical Gardens more famous plants was "Bella", the Titan Arum, known for it's huge blossom and stinky smell. Gross confirms that of the two Titan Arums currently at the greenhouse, one was not in the room that was damaged, and the other is expected to recover.
The sale will take place as scheduled on Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. Hundred of flowering annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables ferns and native plants line the edge of the walkway, while bushes and trees are located next to the greenhouse.
The UNCC sale is a favorite of local gardeners and is attended by hundreds of people from the area each year. In addition to a wide variety of native ferns, bushes and perennials, gardeners can also find many non-natives that are well suited to the Carolina's soil and climate. This year, the University City Garden Club will also be at the garden sale with stepping stones that can be purchased for your garden.
