Uncanny ghost was a monkey

Historic Highland Cemetery was established in early December 1907 in northern Kentucky. A new cemetery was greatly needed as smaller cemeteries in the area began to fill up. There are several prominent and historical people buried at Highland Cemetery. Highland Cemetery now covers 250 acres with over 46,000 burials.

Highland Cemetery has its share of mysteries. There is a grave of a woman whose body was discovered in Devou Park in 1924. She had been shot to death and her remains were never identified. There are graves of other poor souls who died violently or mysteriously, including a lawyer/politician, who was shot to death in his law office in 1875 by the husband of a woman he represented in a hostile divorce case.

For a while, the citizens of Highland feared their cemetery was haunted by a ghost. For several months residents in the vicinity of Highland Cemetery were mystified by a phenomenon they attributed to the spirits of the dead—the ringing of the bell in the cemetery tower every night—always after midnight. The ghost watchers never found any trace of the allusive ghost in the town. The door was always locked and there was no rope dangling from the bell.

One by one—the ghost hunters were scared away. Then one afternoon, the “ghost” was discovered! A small monkey, who had escaped from the Cincinnati Zoo five months prior, was found climbing up the side of the tower by growing vines to the home he had made in the cupola where the bell hung!
