Bryn Renner completed 22 of 33 passes for 336 yards and a touchdown, leading North Carolina to a 40-20 win over visiting Middle Tennessee State Saturday at Kenan Stadium.
Both teams are now 1-1 after their first meeting in school history.
Romar Morris carried 10 times for 46 yards and two scores for the Tar Heels, who rolled up 513 yards total offense on the day.
MTSU quarterback Logan Kilgore was 21-for-35 for 211 yards, but was intercepted three times. Jordan Parker carried 22 times for 108 yards and a score for MTSU, which finished with 513 yards.
The Blue Raiders drove to the Tar Heel 1 on their first possession, but Tre Boston intercepted a Kilgore pass to kill the drive.
UNC led 23-0 at halftime.
The Blue Raiders cut the margin to 26-13 following Jared Singletary’s 25-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 13:06 left, but Renner’s 18-yard TD pass to Quinshad Davis just over a minute later pretty much sealed the outcome.
The Tar Heels’ next game is on Sept. 21 at Georgia Tech.
