UNC Pembroke tops Stevens Tech to win 2014 Virginia Duals American Division

University of North Carolina-Pembroke wrestling won the American College Division team title at the 2014 Virginia Duals at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. Saturday night.

The top-seeded UNCP Braves beat No. 2 seed Stevens Institute of Technology, 22-15, in the finals. Stevens won the American Division title last year.

Right from the start of the dual for the American Division team title, Stevens jumped to a six-point lead when UNCP forfeited the 125-pound match… then added to its lead with a win at 133. However, UNCP won six of the ten individual matches overall, getting bonus points with Daniel Ownbey’s pin at 141, and Stuart Nadeau’s major decision victory at 197.

The Braves qualified for the finals by defeating Central Florida, 41-12, in the opening round… then, in the semifinals, beat Ferrum, 28-13. In its first match of the two-day tournament, Stevens topped Anderson, 37-15… then got an 18-15 win over No. 3 seed Limestone.
