Incendiary. That's the word. BURNIN' HOT.
Let me tell you, my friends. Your blues examiner is not a young woman. No, I have been around and I have heard some great jam bands. I grew up on The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, etc.
But I have never, no NEVER, heard better jamming then I heard last night.
Aussie bluesman Geoff Achison, Athens favorite Randall Bramblett, the amazing Ted Pecchio, and world-class drummer Yonrico Scott could not possibly have played together better, or blended their styles more seamlessly. And when special surprise guest Oliver Wood joined them onstage, it gave a new meaning to the term Supergroup. I have heard a bit of the Woods Brothers, but not enough to realize just how astonishingly great Oliver Wood is. I have a new star in my pantheon, people, and he is it!
But Geoff Achison, with his Cocker-esque vocal sound, is a major talent himself, and no one does Southern blues-rock better than Randall Bramblett. They soared, while Yonrico Scott and Ted Pecchio laid down an absolutely solid backbeat, and soared themselves when the time came to do so.
I did not know who Ted Pecchio was until last night, except that he is in Susan Tedeschi's band, but I sure do now. This young man is a great bass player and it was a joy to watch him beam through the whole show. I love to watch a band have a good time onstage, and Peccio helped shed that good vibe everywhere last night.
As for Eddie's Attic, I love the place. I hadn't been there in a lot of years, and I forgot how crowded it got (or it was more crowded last night than usual, maybe.) But even sitting at the back on the risers like we were, we could see and hear perfectly! The wildly appreciative crowd kept all their enthusiasm to themselves and LISTENED until the music ended, and then they let loose with entusiasm! But during the music, they stayed put and they just let the music be as clear and as great as it could possibly be, and they were rewarded with a rare concert where every single song seemed better than the one before.
Geoff, Randall, Yonrico, Ted and Oliver were a genius lineup, a perfect group. It's hard to believe they had been playing together for days, not years.
To call last night a blues concert is to do it a disservice. It was a blues, jazz, rock, kick-the-genres-to-the-curb-and-play-amazing music concert. If you EVER have a chance to see ANY of these musicians, you owe it to yourself to go. And if you ever get to see them altogether, PLEASE take the opportunity.
5 out of 5 exploding stars!!
