Unappetizing restaurants: California closings due to unsanitary reasons

A Subway restaurant was closed for having clogged drain lines which resulted in the overflow of sewage inside the building. The California Subway was located at 1941 North Rose Avenue in Oxnard. On January 9, 2014 the store was officially closed for having inhabitable and unappetizing conditions.

Angel Donuts located at 320 Harvard Boulevard in Santa Paula was also closed because of clogged drain lines. This drain problem resulted in sewage overflow in the restaurant. The store was officially closed on January 2, 2014.

On December 12, 2013 Sarai Bakery & Donuts closed its doors because of a cockroach infestation. The restaurant was deemed as having unsanitary conditions. Sarai Bakery & Donuts is located at 587 Ventu Park Road in Newbury Park. They reopened on December 13, 2013.

Numero Uno Pizza closed on December 11, 2013. The restaurant had a rodent infestation and its facility was deemed as having unsanitary conditions. The restaurant reopened on December 12, 2013. This restaurant is located at 1960 Sequoia Avenue in Simi Valley.

Chef Burger closed its doors on November 11, 2013 due to a cockroach infestation. The restaurant was also deemed as having unsanitary conditions. The restaurant reopened its doors on December 12, 2013.

Lee’s Chinese Food was added to the list of restaurants which closed in November. On November 6, 2013 the restaurant closed due to an infestation of cockroaches. Lee’s Chinese Food restaurant was also deemed as having unsanitary conditions. The restaurant reopened on November 7, 2013.

When a restaurant is deemed as unsanitary it is for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Improper washing of hands and fingernails
  • Improper storage of food (inadequate refrigeration temperature or hot holding temperature)
  • Improperly cooling foods
  • Cross contamination (e.g., from uncooked meat to salad fixings)
  • Improperly cleaned and sanitized eating and cooking utensils, work areas, and equipment
  • Contamination of food, utensils, and equipment from flies, roaches, and other pests.
