It's old news that Donald Sterling is going to serve a lifetime ban from NBA Basketball. He was fined $2.5 million dollars for despicable comments he made on a recording about black people. He told his mistress , V. Stiviano not to bring black people to Clippers Basketball Games.
Now the unanswered question is the recording itself. Who made it? Was it Stiviano who leaked it to TMZ?. Who made the recording? Was it made during an in person conversation? If so was there anyone else in the room? It does not sound like it and it certainly does not make any sense that Sterling initiated the recording and then leaked it to TMZ. That thought is absurd.
Stiviano ,on the tape is very polite and seems to know the recording is on, saying all the right things. Now we get back to the tape. Is it legal? Where was the tape made? If it was made in a state where both parties in a conversation have to give consent, then the person who leaked the tape could be in a heap of trouble. If it was made in a state where one party to the tape knew about it, and if both deny it, someone is lying.
Both parties on the tape have denied leaking it. Some things are clear, the comments on the tape are repugnant and Sterling has not commented on anything except to say he will not sell the team. That could wind up in a protracted lawsuit with the octogenarian digging in his heels, and potentially walking away with a huge profit. He is 80 years old.
Stiviano is seen as a gold digger who has expressed a desire to become President of the United States. She has been pictured walking around town in a ridiculous visor that obscures her face. That alone will insure those hopes get dashed before she even gets an exploratory committee together.
This scandal will stay around the Clippers organization and will make it's way around both federal and state courts for many years to come. The only one to benefit from this is Sterling, who may be forced to sell the team at a tidy profit. With an estimated fortune at 1- to 2 billion dollars, he can well afford to tie this up by making shrewd legal moves that make this scandal live on longer than he does.
