When the 2013 University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball schedule came out, fans of the Tritons were excited for the season to begin, but a bit disappointed that they'd have to wait until the end of March before finally getting to see their team play at home.
Well, Triton fans everywhere got a great piece of news on Friday, when the UMSL athletic department announced that it would be moving its baseball home opener up a week -- to this coming Saturday, with a gamedate added on Sunday as well -- because the game field at this week's opponent's facility at Lewis University is not yet playable.
So instead, the Flyers will travel down to St. Louis for the weekend and play a pair of Saturday-Sunday doubleheaders against the Tritons at the UMSL Baseball Field.
The weekend four-game set will mark the beginning of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season for both clubs, with UMSL looking to get off to a hot start, after finishing last season by winning 24 of its last 31 games, and posting a 32-21 record for the season.
The Tritons, who were picked to finish third in the GLVC West preseason poll this year, will begin the GLVC season with a 3-5 record after opening the year with games in Indiana and Florida the last two weekends.
UMSL's last victory in Florida came in a 5-3 triumph over No. 15-ranked Grand Valley State.
The standard 9-7-7-9 format will be in play for the four games against Lewis this weekend, with Saturday's first game scheduled for nine innings and Game 2 marked as a seven-inning affair.
Then on Sunday, Game 1 will be seven innings and Game 2 will go for the full nine.
Lewis, which is led by senior first baseman and pitcher Michael Schroeder -- the current GLVC Player of the Week -- will come to town with a 6-2 record, after notching a 4-1 mark at a tournament last week.
First pitch on both days is slated for noon, with Game 2 on both days scheduled to start approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 1.
