UMBC senior lacrosse captain Atwell leaves team

Retrievers defender Bobby Atwell, a preseason third-team All-American, has left the team for personal reasons, UMBC athletic officials said.

Atwell missed all of 2009 with a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament, but returned for the start of this season and rounded into better form in recent works.

In a recent interview, Atwell said he felt 100 percent on the field. Retrievers coach Don Zimmerman also praised his captain for deciding to return to the team for a fifth year despite the players he came in with no longer being with the team.

Atwell is still a student at UMBC.
