UM-NSU CARD is the result of a 1987 Task Force on Autism, authorized and funded by the Florida Legislature. The task force operated out of the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida. This Task Force generated a report in 1988. Their primary recommendation was to develop comprehensive regional resource and training centers throughout the State of Florida in order to better serve Autistic people and their families. As a result, in 1990, a demonstration project was funded by the Legislature with supplementary support from the Council and the State of Florida’s Department of Education. In 1993, the Legislature passed a statute  authorizing the program and appropriating start-up funds to establish the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at various sites around the State of Florida. Each CARD center has its own constituency board comprised of family members who help guide program policies, priorities, and activities.

UM-NSU CARD offers multiple resources for the Autism community. These include "Fast Times" which is a newsletter geared toward Asperger Syndrome, a general monthly newsletter, adult services, and other online resources - incuding fact sheets which are also available in Spanish and Creole. There are numerous ongoing research studies, including a partnership with the Dan Marino Foundation called MARI. Don't forget to check their frequently-updated "Latest Autism News" page. While they are funded by both the Florida Department of Education and The Unicorn Childrens Foundation, UM-NSU CARD is always in need of donations and supporters.

I've heard recently that Aspergers may be phased out and placed under the broader, more generic Autism Spectrum Disorder title because families are having issues with special education.

    Haven't confirmed this.

It's still under discussion... it will be interesting to see what the final wording is.

    Interesting concepts here. Lydia.
