Saturday, June 21, the charitable music organization, ULUV Music, will be hosting hundreds of free live music performances at 20 outdoor locations all over San Francisco to celebrate ‘ULUV Music Day’ coinciding with International Music Day. International Music Day or otherwise known as Fete de la Musique, occurs annually on June 21, features musicians from around the world to perform on the streets. ULUV Music plans to participate by incorporating 20 'stages' at parks, parklets, Bart Stations and along the Embarcadero. ‘ULUV Music Day’ will lead into their yearly main event, ‘ULUV 2014’ on October 11, 2014, and several Happy Hours around San Francisco to raise funds for the big event.
ULUV Music was created by lifelong musicians, producers and engineers Starita and Robin Applewood. Applewood produced over 400 events with his Bay Vibes organization and has done philanthropic work for Surfrider Foundation and raising money for AIDS and cancer research. Starita worked with Dolby Laboratories and serves as the President of the Recording Academy’s San Francisco Chapter. Both have been in the local music industry for over sixteen years. They decided to create ULUV Music, “to fulfill this need for a central community entity”, Applewood explains, “from the perspective of the musicians, industry professionals and community that make music every day.”
ULUV Music wants to fulfill San Francisco’s disconnect of Bay Area’s musicians and bring the community together by producing community-driven music events. Starita points out, “there has long been a need for a central entity or group to act as a conduit or connector between all of the facets of the local music industry and community at large to create a sense of camaraderie and collaboration…One of those goals is sustainability and making money doing what we love....music!”
On 'ULUV Music Day’, local musicians of all different genres will perform from 12:00pm to 5:00pm all across the city, from North Beach, SOMA, the Ferry Building, Pacific Heights, Noe Valley, to the Mission and more. Click here to check out the official line-up. At 6pm, an open invitation is extended to all musicians to meet at Mission Dolores Park for a Music Flash Mob and to sing Bob Marley’s “One Love” together to show strength and solidarity as a community. Jocelyn Kane, Executive Director of the San Francisco Entertainment Commission, will present ULUV Music with a proclamation declaring June 21 ‘ULUV Music Day’. At 6:30pm everyone will travel to the Dolores Park Cafe for an open mic after-party with sponsor Ninkasi Brewing.
All of this will lead up to ULUV Music’s annual ‘ULUV 2014’ event on October 11, 2014. ‘ULUV 2014’ will move to the Mission District and showcase local talent on two stages along Valencia street and at many of the surrounding venues. Applewood discusses 'ULUV 2014', “will still have the same soul and mission”, as last year’s inaugural ‘ULUV 2013’ event, “but will shine a much larger light on our mission and the entities we aim to support.” Also, unlike other events, ‘ULUV 2014’ hopes to support artists, businesses and charities and plans to have a streaming element to the festival to bolster audiences internationally. A portion of the proceeds will go towards: MusiCares, Do It For The Love, Niroga Institute and Little Kids Rock. You can donate by purchasing pre-sale passes, which give entry to all of the surrounding venues. Pre-sales will go on sale in August.
In addition to hosting music festivals city-wide across San Francisco, ULUV Music also has launched ‘District’ which creates opportunities for revenue in the local music industry by assisting businesses the necessary resources to host live music at their place of business. They also offer best practices in artist compensation, sound and booking. ULUV Music currently has a roster of 470 bands to fit any situation.
