The Ultimate Wine Challenge may have a bit of a hyperbolic name, but it stands in good stead with wine professionals. The results of the 5th annual competition, released Thursday in Westchester County, New York, showed that the judges evaluated more than 850 wines, foreign and domestic.

Despite the large field of competitors, New York State entries fared well. Chateau Frank and Dr. Frank, relentlessly rolling through a sujmmer of victories in major compeittions across the nation, ledt the contingent with Gold medals for its 2008 Blanc de Blancs, 2007 Blanc de Noirs, and 2007 Brut, with Chairman's Trophies going to Dr. Frank's 2012 Riesling Reserve and 2013 Gewurztraminer, and Gold medals for its 2013 Dry Risling and 2012 Pinot Gris.

Wagner Vineyards also scored high in the Ultimate Wine Challenge, with Gold medals for its 2012 Semi-Dry Riesling, 2012 Riesling Caywood East Vineyard, 2012 Riesling Select, 2012 Semi-Dry Gewurztraminer, and 2012 Riesling Ice Wine. Other New York Gold medals included Black Willow Odin's Nectar, plus Sheldrake Point 2013 Riesling and 2013 Pinot Gris. Go here for the full results of the Ultimate Wine Challenge.

[Meanwhile, in other major wins for New York wines, Sheldrake Point Winery took both Top White (2011 Riesling) and Top Sweet Wine (2010 Riesling Ice Wine) at the Houston Livestock & Rodeo International Wine Competition, and at the Denver International, Chateau Frank Celebre took Double Gold/Best of Class and the 2007 Brut won a Gold, with Gold medals also awarded to Dr. Frank 2012 Dry Riesling, 2012 Gruner Veltliner, and 2012 Dry Rose, and Gold medals went to Casa Larga 2010 Fiori Delle Stelle Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, and 2013 Vidal Blanc.]

Back at the Ultimate Beverage Challenge, 33 wines were awarded Chairman's Trophies as the highest scoring wines in their category. Top-scoring wines will be published in the "Ultimate Beverage Challenge 2014 Guide to the World's Best Wine & Spirits" in the October issue of Beverage Media, which goes out to over 70,000 beverage alcohol buyers in the United States.
