Richard Garriott, (aka Lord British) the creator of the Ultima franchise, has a new game project in the works. This game, called Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues, has a Kickstarter campaign behind it, with a goal of $1,000,000. This campaign launched on March 8th, and will run until April 7th, 2013.
This fantasy RPG, is projected to focus on player choices and world discovery versus level grinding and directing players through a straight lined path to complete their quests.
Some of the features of Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues that are listed on their Kickstarter page:
- Classless character system
- Player housing
- Crafting system that avoids busy work
- Meaningful PVP that also minimizes griefing
- Scene based encounters
- Multiplayer Online Game - which can also be played solo player / offline
- Fully interactive virtual world
- Available for PC, Mac, and Linux

Richard Garriott stated in a press release:
“This will not be a Facebook or casual game. We think it will appeal to a multitude of audiences, but we are planning on making a game that will harken back to the same design principles that you can find in my earlier games.
A limited, "First Responder" pledge for $25 gets you a full copy of the game, and into the alpha and beta of Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues. This is limited to only 5,000 people who pledge under this level. It already is nearly fully at the time of this writing.
The $10 pledge is the, "Guilt Pledge" giving people a chance to repent for ever pirating Ultima Online or using an exploit against other players.
This could be the RPG gamers are waiting for. I personally am excited for being able to play single player offline and player housing. Like Dreamfall Chapters, The Longest Journey, I predict this Kickstarter to have one of the highest turnouts ever, in the gaming/software project category.
