The Ukrainian pop/rap duo of Potap and Nastya will be performing at Hararah's Casino, Atlantic City, on February 3, 2012. Yep, you read that right. . . Ukrainian pop/rap. Well, why not? The USA doesn't have the market cornered on any particular musical style, although we might like to think that we do.
The name of the group comes from the names of the stars. Potap is actually Alex Potapenko and Nastya is Anastasia Kamensky (both spellings Americanized for ease of pronunciation). They have been together for awhile now. From what I could read in English, they've been performing together and making music videos since 2007.
Nastya studied music and dance in France and Italy, as well as her native Kiev. She was a professional dancer before teaming up with Alex. Nastya also studied at the Ukrainian-American Instutite of Humanities where instruction was in English and loves talking to their fans. Potap is also from Kiev. The duo has performed at many international events and contests. The song Without Love became their first Ukrainian chart topper.
I've listened to several of their music clips on You Tube and though they are billed as either pop or rap, they have a pleasant, somewhat softer "rap" sound, not quite what you would think of as American pop or rap. The clip featured here is Cry Me a River, this Examiner's favorite of what I listened to. I'm betting their show will be a good one, whether you can understand the lyrics or not. It will also give the extensive Ukrainian/Russian community in this area of New Jersey an act in their own language and that has to be special indeed! Note on tickets: Every time I click on the Box Office at Harrah's, I keep getting bounced out to 3rd party suppliers like Ticketmaster, StubHub and AC Ticket Guys (toll free 1-866-881-2999). In fact, there's a link to Ticketmaster at the bottom left of that page! I would call Harrah's (local number is 609-441-5052) to see what's going on with these tickets if you plan to go. They may have a discount offer for you!
