Anti-government protests in the Ukraine

Such action raises serious questions about Ukraine ability to secure its borders and to protect its people.

This is third-world country kind of behavior. A developed nation would have responded with military force, or homeland security would have detected and been prepared for such a breach.

Can one imagine that happening in the United States?

Looking at the CIA World Factbook to assess Ukraine’s military here is what it says.

“Military branches:

Ground Forces, Naval Forces, Air Forces (2013)

Military service age and obligation:

18-25 years of age for compulsory and voluntary military service; conscript service obligation is 12 months for Army and Air Force, 18 months for Navy (2012)

Manpower available for military service:

males age 16-49: 10,984,394
females age 16-49: 11.26 million (2010 est.)
Manpower fit for military service:

males age 16-49: 6,893,551
females age 16-49: 8,792,504 (2010 est.)
Manpower reaching militarily significant age annually:

male: 246,397
female: 234,916 (2010 est.)
Military expenditures:

2.77% of GDP (2012)
country comparison to the world: 27
2.4% of GDP (2011)
2.77% of GDP (2010)”

What is apparent is a severe breakdown by the Ukraine government.
