Ukazoo Books offers books for food in August

During the month of August, Ukazoo Books in Southgate is offering a free used book to customers who make a donation of three cans of food to the Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry in Taylor. Customers can receive up to two free books per day and as many as eight free books during the month.

Ukazoo Books was founded in Towson, Maryland in 2007. The Southgate store, which opened last October in the space occupied by the former Borders Express store in the Southgate Shopping Center, was only the second location for the new- and used-book store, and it is still the only Ukazoo store in Michigan. A third store opened in Toledo, Ohio, in January, 2012.

The food that each store collects goes to help local organizations who help feed the poor and hungry within their communities. Canned goods collected by the main store in Towson, Maryland, will be donated to the Assistance Center of Towson Churches. Donations to the Toledo store will go to benefit the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank.

This year is the first that the Southgate store has participated in the food drive. Last year, Ukazoo's Maryland location collected around 1400 food items. "We are hoping to make the same impact here in Downriver in our first year of the food drive," Ukazoo store manager Anthony Campbell stated. "In this economy," he continued, "anyone can be next in needing help. Fish & Loaves can touch so many people--we are glad to try and help them."
