In the past few days news reports have been surfacing of as many as 100,000 dead and dying drum fish what were found washing up in the Arkansas River.   In Louisiana, drivers had to dodge thousands of dead birds that had fallen from the sky and dotted streets and highways.

The fish and bird deaths have been major news for several UK-based newspapers.    The Daily Mail’s stories have included photos of the dead birds and fish along with speculation about what may have caused the deaths.    The Times of London has also given the story major coverage.

What could be causing the deaths?

Scientists say ultimately lab tests will determine the cause.   Speculation that New Year’s Eve fireworks, thunderstorms, parasites or environmental toxins could be to blame.

The dead birds in Lousiana may have been killed after hitting overhead power lines, the Daily Mail Reports.

The deaths of dead fish along a 20-mile section of the Arkansas River is still baffling biologists who are examining the fish.

There are also reports that millions of dead fish are washing up in Maryland, in Chesapeake Bay, just outside of Washington, D. C.

The UK-based Sky News is reporting that two million dead fish were found in the bay.   The leading theory now is that the fish, mainly juvenile spot fish, may have died from cold water stress.   The area had experienced record cold temperatures. Other large fish kills were reported in Chesapeake Bay in 1976 and 1980 but officials told Sky News that the most recent kill was likely the largest.   Sky News video is on the left.   Click on it to play.

The fish kill in the former UK colony of New Zealand is making headline news there.   The New Zealand Herald is reporting that  thousands of dead snapper have washed up on beaches along Coromandel Peninsula beaches.   Scientists don’t know what is causing the fish to die there.  The Coromandel Peninsula beaches are on the North Island, West of Auckland.

Brazil is the first Latin America city to be hit with reports of massive fish deaths.   According to Hispanically Speaking News,   at least 100 tons of fish, including sardines, croakers and catfish have washed up off the coast of Paraná, about a 1,000 miles north of Rio de Janeiro.

Conspiracy theorists are having a field day connecting all the occurrences, but scientists stress that it all is likely nothing more than a series of bizarre coincidences, all of which, ultimately will have a logical scientific cause.
