Once a year, at the University of Indianapolis, the Music Department holds what is called Jazz Week. It is an entire week featuring jazz combos and ensembles comprised both of students and of world renowned jazz musicians. Every night of the week showcases some form of jazz music to be enjoyed by enthusiasts and casual listeners alike. As such, Jazz Week is the best week of the year to take in a night of jazz music at the University of Indianapolis.

Monday: Faculty Artist Series: Bossa Rio Sextet

Jazz Studies Professor Harry Miedema leads fellow jazz musicians in performing predominantly Brazilian style jazz, which emphasizes beats and rhythms not commonly found in American jazz. The group also performs many numbers composed by their own members. The show starts at 7:30 and tickets are free.

Tuesday: UIndy Jazz Ensemble

Lead by Harry Miedema and comprised of UIndy students, the Jazz Ensemble performs a wide array of jazz literature. The ensemble performs pieces that showcase all of the typical jazz instruments including saxophones and horns. This free show begins at 7:30.

Wednesday: Jamey Aebersold Quartet

Internationally known for his jazz and improvisation education workshops held the world over, saxophonist Jamey Aebersold leads this quartet of professional jazz musicians. Playing jazz standards, as well as some of their own, this quartet is not to be missed by fans of the genre. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $10 for seniors and UIndy faculty and staff, and free for students and anyone 18 and under. Doors open at 7:15.

Thursday: Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra

Founded by Mark Buselli and Brent Wallarab, this ensemble focuses on creating new and innovative works for jazz orchestra and jazz education. The night is sure to be full of brand new pieces created by the masterful Buselli and Wallarab. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $10 for seniors and UIndy faculty and staff, and free for students and anyone 18 and under. The show begins at 7:30.

Friday: Famous Jazz Orchestra

Led by trombonist Vaughn Wiester, this twenty one piece big band orchestra is based in Columbus, Ohio. This ensemble features a twelve-piece brass section, is known as a “Young Blood” ensemble and appears every Monday night at the Columbus City Hall. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $10 for seniors and UIndy faculty and staff, and free for students and anyone 18 and under. The jazz starts at 7:30.


Saturday: Randy Brecker


Trumpeter Randy Brecker has performed around the world with legendary musicians as a member of several jazz ensembles, including the Brecker Brothers with his brother Michael. Brecker has won five Grammy awards over his long, successful career. This world-class musician is performing at 7:30 in the Ruth Lily Performance Hall. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $10 for seniors and UIndy faculty and staff, and free for students and anyone 18 and under.
