The University Interscholastic League boys’ basketball playoffs get underway Monday night with a handful of Houston-area bidistrict round games. On Tuesday, a full slate of games featuring teams from Class 5A down to 2A will complete the first round.
Several interesting matchups highlight the first-round schedule.
On Monday night, Wheatley and Yates face off against each other in a Class 4A tilt. In any other year, this game might be a regional final, but Wheatley was forced to forfeit five district wins earlier this season in 22-4A and, as a result, are the fourth seed from that district. Yates was the 21-4A champion.
Both teams routinely put up triple-digit scores against their opponents and whenever these two schools meet up on the hardwood, it always makes for an entertaining and competitive game. They met once in the regular season, in the HISD tournament, with Yates coming away with a 99-72 victory, so Wheatley has revenge on its mind.
A sellout crowd is expected at Delmar Field House.
Clear Brook and Hightower will meet up on Tuesday night at the Dobie High School gym. Brook is the 24-5A champion and Hightower is a No. 4 seed, but they come out of a highly competitive 23-5A and are looking to find a way to make a return trip to the state tournament.
Another contest between 23-5A and 24-5A, Elkins vs. Clear Lake, features some good individual talent.
Elkins, the No. 3 seed from 23-5A, is led by Long Beach State-bound senior Branford Jones. Jones averages 21 points per game and runs the point for the Knights. Clear Lake is led by a trio of players—Rob Lewis (17.7 ppg), Alden Miles (14.0) and Paris Clayton (11.5)—who combine to average 43 points per game.
