A benches-clearing brawl broke out in the top of the second inning that led to multiple ejections. It all seemed to stem from the previous night, when rehabbing Dodgers infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena took longer than the Aces liked when rounding the bases after hitting a three-run homer.
Arruebarrena was leading off the second inning when Mike Bolsinger buzzed him with a pitch. Arruebarrena took exception and after he struck out an argument broke out with catcher Blake Lalli.
The arguing turned into pushing and shoving and suddenly both benches cleared, leading to an ugly fight around home plate. By the time it was all sorted out, four Isotopes players and five Aces were ejected along with Reno manager Phil Nevin.
The ejected Isotopes were Arruebarrena, infielder Walter Ibarra, and pitchers Pedro Baez and Carlos Frias. Reno's ejection list featured Lalli, first baseman Mike Jacobs, outfielder Aaron Cunningham and pitchers Andrew Chafin and Kameron Loe.
There did not appear to be any injuries resulting from the brawl, though that will be determined later. Suspensions will also likely be handed out in the coming days.
As for the game, Reno (57-51) jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the fight. Former UNM Lobos standout Jordan Pacheco had an RBI double and scored a run in the first inning for the Aces.
Clint Robinson went 4-for-5 with two RBI for Albuquerque (51-57). Jamie Romak was 3-for-5 with an RBI while Tim Federowicz went 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and an RBI.
Zach Lee (6-9) took the loss for the Isotopes, allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk in 4.2 innings. Bolsinger (6-1) got the win for the Aces.
Albuquerque and Reno will meet again Sunday at 7:05 p.m. The Isotopes' starter has not been announced, while the Aces had scheduled Chafin (4-4, 5.45 ERA) prior to his ejection Saturday.
Infielder Alex Guerrero came off the disabled list and went 1-for-5 while starting at second base. Infielder Delvis Morales was optioned to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga to make room.
