The Big Dawg is gonna be back between the hedges of Sanford Stadium this Saturday.
On Saturday, before the homecoming game with Vanderbilt, interim mascot Uga Russ will hand over the collar to “Big Bad Bruce,” Uga VIII’s registered name. He is named after the University School of Veterinary Medicine’s Dr. Bruce Hollett, who will also be at the collaring ceremony. Dr. Hollett has taken care of many a Seiler family bulldog over the years, the line that has produced Georgia mascots for over 50 years.
According to owner Sonny Seiler, Uga VIII was born on Sept. 12, 2009, and he is the grandson of Uga VI.
"We had several puppies that were direct descendents from the Uga line to choose from," said Seiler on www.georgiadogs.com. "We came to the conclusion that this dog had all the physical attributes that we look for in a Georgia mascot. He is the grandson of Uga VI. He is only 13 months old. He already weighs 55 lbs. and we think that he has an excellent head. We made the choice based on experience and I'm confident the Bulldog Nation will be pleased when he is introduced Saturday."
The official collaring of Uga VIII will take place in a pre-game ceremony tomorrow, Oct. 16, before the Georgia v. Vanderbilt homecoming game begins. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:21 p.m. (ET). Fans can watch the game live on the SEC Network.
