UGA tailback Washaun Ealey arrested on Friday

UPDATE:  UGA head coach Mark Richt has suspended sophomore tailback Washaun Ealey for a minimum of one game following his arrest early this morning. Following today's practice, Coach Richt made the following statement to the press:

"I’m extremely disappointed in Washaun’s lack of good judgement. He was fully aware of his suspended license and had been instructed not to get behind the wheel. As a result, he’ll miss at least the first game and will also be subject to internal discipline.

"We spend a lot of time going over every single player making sure their licenses are up to date and if they're not making them aware of that and letting them know they can't drive. Josh Brooks, our director of football operations, and Bryan McClendon saw him face-to-face and he said he wouldn't drive. He drove a short distance, and he's going to pay a severe price for it. It's pretty simple: if you've got a suspended license, don't drive.

"If he handles this the way he should and behaves between now and the next one, he has a pretty good chance of playing. He has to show me he deserves to go back and not only play but also practice. I'm not saying it won't be more than one (game)."

Georgia v. Louisiana-Lafayette is scheduled for Sept. 4 at Sanford Stadium; kickoff is set at 12:21 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationwide by the SEC Network.

Georgia Bulldogs sophomore tailback Washaun Ealey was arrested this morning, Friday, Aug. 27, and booked into the Clarke County Jail. Ealey was charged with hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license. Additionally, Ealey had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in the Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court in July, for charges of speeding and a vehicle registration violation. It was this failure to appear that resulted in the suspension of Ealey’s license.

Ealey was booked into the jail at 5:22 a.m. and released at 11:18 a.m. on bonds totaling $3,480, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Parking Services employees witnessed the accident, made contact with the driver and advised him to wait because police had been called,” UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson stated to the AJC. “The driver advised he could not wait and left the scene."

After running the tag on the vehicle, officers went to the dorm room of the registered driver who stated that his roommate, Washaun Ealey, had been driving the car. Ealey then admitted he had been driving the car.

Alcohol was not involved in the accident, and there were no injuries.

UGA head coach Mark Richt has not yet commented on the arrest of Ealey, or possible suspension from the team. However, Ealey was not on the practice field this afternoon.

Coach Richt is scheduled for a press conference after today’s practice.
