The No. 4-ranked Georgia Bulldogs Lady Diamond Dogs (41-7) defeated Kennesaw State (28-23) on Wednesday, 6-1, and dedicated the University of Georgia Jack Turner Softball Stadium, as well.
Freshman Morgan Montemayor (19-3) allowed only one run on two hits before being relieved by sophomore Alison Owen to begin the sixth inning; Owen gave up one hit.
Before the game, the official dedication and ribbon cutting for Jack Turner Softball Stadium was held. Gifts from the late Jack Turner and his son, Jimmy, were instrumental in the building of the UGA softball facility.
"I would simply say if you were to look around for someone and some family who supported the entirety of what we do here at UGA, you would be hard pressed to find a family who has been more committed to this University than have they,” University of Georgia president Michael F. Adams said. "I certainly want to congratulate the softball team on the extraordinary season they have had so far. Coach [Lu] Harris-Champer and all those who work with her who deserve our congratulations and thanks in every way. But most of all this is the Turner's day, and I'm honored to have some small role in helping make more meaningful to the university community the memory of Jack Turner."
UGA Director of Athletics Greg McGarity said:
"It is indeed my honor to be here on this very special occasion. This is a great way to honor an exemplary supporter of the athletic program in Jack Turner. Jack's fingerprints are on so many activities, programs, and history in the athletic program, especially this complex and more specifically for women's athletic programs. He loved the University of Georgia and especially its women's athletic programs.
"We all know Atlanta has its own Turner stadium as the home of the Braves, and now Athens has its own Turner Stadium to be our home. As we all know, there's no place like home."
The Lady Diamond Dogs will next hit the road and return to SEC play.
Georgia (SEC 14-6) v. Auburn (34-14, SEC 11-11) is scheduled for a three-game series, beginning Friday, Apr. 29, at Auburn. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
