UGA receiver AJ Green sits out 2010 season opener amid NCAA investigation

Georgia Bulldogs junior receiver A.J. Green was suspended by the University of Georgia shortly before the Dawgs’ opener today v. Louisiana-Lafayette, pending the ruling of a NCAA investigation.

Green has been under the microscope for a number of weeks concerning a possible violation of NCAA rules regarding contact between agents and players. According to reports, the NCAA is investigating whether or not Green attended an agent-hosted party in Miami. Green, however, has stated that he has never been to Miami.

Although UGA head coach Mark Richt has not been allowed to comment on the investigation, the decision to hold Green out of the lineup today may have been motivated by a proactive attempt at damage control. Specifically, if the NCAA ruling is not in favor of Green, and if a suspension is mandated, the voluntary suspension of Green by the University of Georgia for today’s game may be applied retroactively and count as one of the suspended games.
