The UGA Lady Hoop Dogs (12-2, SEC 1-0) opened SEC play with a win on Sunday, defeating the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (11-2, 0-1), 67-57.
"We have the ability to be a very balanced team," said head women’s basketball coach Andy Landers on www.georgiadogs.com, after four Lady Dogs hit double digits for the third straight game. "They play unselfishly and share the ball. They all have the ability to score. Today, they executed the game plan very well."
Jasmine Hassell had the team-high with 19 points; Anne Marie Armstrong followed with 15 points; Khaalidah Miller and Meredith Mitchell both scored 12 points on the day.
"I thought that we were very good," Coach Landers commented on the team’s play. "We had difficulty manning their zone at times, but overall I thought we executed very well offensively. We rebounded the ball well until the end. Towards the end of the game, we showed some signs of fatigue. We may have played people too long."
Coach Landers also commented on the importance of the No. 17 Lady Hoop Dogs starting SEC play off on the right foot, saying, "It's everything to start SEC play with a win. Half the teams wake up on Monday morning undefeated and tied for first place and the other half are tied for last. It's everything to get the win."
Arkansas head women’s basketball Coach Tom Collen also commented on the game on www.georgiadogs.com. "It was a tough way to start. I knew when the SEC schedule came out, we started at Georgia, at Kentucky and Tennessee at home, it was going to be rough. We got off to a good start. They tried to play us man; he tries to play us man every year and it never works. He jumped into his zone, and we didn't handle the zone. He knows that defense will work. Credit to them, I thought they played a pretty good basketball game."
The UGA women will be back on the road this Thursday.
Georgia v. Tennessee is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 5, in Knoxville. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Fans can see the game regionally on CSS.
