UGA Basketball: Lady Dogs open SEC play on the road with Tennessee Vols tonight

The UGA Lady Bulldogs face the Tennessee Lady Volunteers tonight, for their first SEC game on the road for 2012.

The Lady Hoop Dogs, 12-2 overall, are ranked at No. 16, while the Lady Vols, 10-3 overall, are ranked No. 6; both teams are undefeated in SEC play thus far, at 1-0. UGA defeated Arkansas in their SEC opener on Sunday, while the Lady Vols defeated Auburn, 73-52.

Tennessee leads the series with Georgia, 41-15; they lead 17-4 in games played at Knoxville. The Lady Vols are, in fact, the only SEC team with a winning record over the Lady Hoop Dogs. However, UGA head women’s basketball coach Andy Landers does have more wins over Tennessee than any other coach.

The most recent meeting of the Hoop Dogs and Vols in Knoxville was on Feb. 21, 2011, when the Vols defeated Georgia, 77-44. The teams also met in the semis of the 2011 SEC Tournament in Nashville; the Vols took that meeting as well, with a 82-58 routing of Georgia.

Coach Landers said on www.georgiadogs.com that he is looking forward to facing the Vols. "It's always a blast. I personally look forward to going to Knoxville and playing Tennessee. You know that you're always playing one of the most talented basketball teams in the country and a very well-coached basketball team, so it's a great challenge and a great atmosphere."

The Lady Hoop Dogs and Vols are also two of only four Division I women’s basketball programs with a winning record since 1981, i.e. all of the 30 seasons women’s basketball has been part of the NCAA.

Georgia v. Tennessee is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, Jan. 05, in Knoxville. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (ET). Fans can watch the game on CSS, and can listen to the game on the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network (AM 960 The Ref in Athens, 103.7 FM from Gainesville).
