The finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 featured two quarterfinals and two semifinals.
Quarterfinal: James McSweeney vs. Matt Mitrione
Mitrione weighed in at 256 to McSweeney’s 229. Dana White said he thought Mitrione had the power to turn off McSweeney’s lights if he fought the way he did in beating Scott Junk.
At the weigh-in, McSweeney touched noses with Mitrione, touching off a shoving match and some harsh words between the pair. McSweeney had predicted a head-kick knockout.
For the first 90 seconds of the fight, the pair threw some punches and kicks, mainly to size up one another. Some landed, but none did damage to either fighter.
At 2:07, Mitrione landed a combination that seemed to startle the Englishman, who then postured for a takedown. Mitrione went down but grabbed a knee and then an ankle, and eventually McSweeney landed on top in north-south position, chest-to-back.
McSweeney waited for Mitrione to stand up, then sunk in the guillotine, brought back Mitrione to the mat and secured a quick tap.
After the fight, Mitrione said, “It’s over between us, isn’t it?” To which McSweeney gave him a positive answer.
McSweeney became the third fighter into the semifinals, joining Roy Nelson and Brendan Schaub.
