According to his Twitter account today, UFC veteran Jacob Volkmann has been cut by the organization.
"Was just cut from the UFC today. I want to thank the fans, and say i gave it my all. No regrets," Volkmann tweeted.
The move comes as a little bit of a surprise considering that he has a decent record of 6-4 inside the UFC. Typically, a fighter winning more than half his fights is safe. Although he did lose his last fight against Bobby Green, it was not part of a losing streak, which is another reason fighters are normally given their walking papers.
Perhaps the one thing that factored heavily against Jacob Volkmann was his tendency to say controversial things. Following his bout at UFC 125, Volkmann was thrust into the main stream spotlight. Not for his win over Antonio McKee, but rather for what he said in the Octagon afterwards.
Referring to President Obama, Volkmann said, " "Someone needs to knock some sense into that idiot."
He made the comments because of some disagreements he had with the President's policies. However, although he claimed the statements were not meant to be taken literally, the U.S. Secret Service was not so sure. They paid him a visit to make sure there was nothing to be alarmed over. The controversy culminated in his making the rounds on several television shows, as well as his being placed on administrative leave by the high school where he was the assistant head coach of wrestling.
At 15-4 as a professional, Jacob Volkmann is far from done. It is likely if he strings together another couple of wins, he will find himself back in the UFC.
