After a torrid month of August, things may seem to have gotten off to a slow start in September, but MMA is a sport with no off-season. UFC 103 is right around the corner (September 19th) and there's plenty of news surrounding that and other upcoming fights to talk about.
First of all, on the subject of UFC 103, Mike Swick was dropped from the card this week. He suffered a concussion in training and will not be cleared in time to resume training and be ready to fight. British striker, Paul Daley, has been named as his replacement in the bout with Martin Kampmann. Kampmann is a highly regarded welterweight (as is Swick), so he'll need to make an example out of Daley to ensure he continues moving up the ranks toward a shot at Georges St. Pierre's belt.
After Nate Marquardt stunned Demian Maia with a 21-second knockout at UFC 102, there has been much speculation about the Middleweight title and who will get the next shot at it. Both Marquardt and Dan Henderson would be justifiable next opponents for Anderson Silva, but there has also been some talk about possibly having them face each other first. Henderson isn't interested. He says he believes he's earned the title shot and isn't interested in a fight with Marquardt. He said that he'd rather fight in the Light Heavyweight division until he gets the title shot.
B.J. Penn has been confirmed for the UFC 107 fight card. The event will be held at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN on December 12th. An opponent for the Lightweight champ has not been confirmed, but the fight is said to have been offered to Diego Sanchez.
Heavyweights Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo will also face each other at UFC 107.
