The UFC is making a big change, and it is focusing its attention on the women for the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Fox Sports 1. On March 18, UFC.com reported that the strawweight division would be added, and tryouts would begin next month. This new division will be the sole focus of the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter."
The woman that makes it through to the end of the season and wins will be named the new champion of the division. This would make her the first strawweight division champion. The first try outs are set to take place in Las Vegas on April 28. The division is for women that come in at 115 pounds or below, and it is open for women between the ages of 21 and 34. This is only the second division for women. The first is the bantamweight division featuring Ronda Rousy.
This focus on the women is a new twist for the UFC. The women are definitely gaining popularity though. With fighters like Ronda Rousey bringing new interest to the sport, the UFC knows that women are bringing in new fans. This includes the television series. The focus of The Ultimate Fighter was divided between the men and the women last season.
The new season of the series will begin filming in May following the try outs, and it will premiere on Fox Sports 1 in September. What do you think? Are you excited about the addition of the new weight division for women by the UFC?
