Doctors at Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach said that Del Rosario, 30, fell into a coma after his heart attack, which was likely a result of a congenital disorder, said Jason House, the fighter’s manager.
In 2012, Del Rosario debuted in UFC and lost to Stipe Miocic and Pat Barry, then was sidelined throughout 2013 because of injuries, including a rib injury that prompted UFC to scrap his scheduled Dec. 28 fight.
A congenital heart defect is a difficulty with the structure of the heart, which is present at birth. These defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart, and the arteries and veins near the heart. They can upset the typical flow of blood through the heart. The blood flow can slow, or be blocked completely.
Symptoms of severe defects in newborns include:
• Rapid breathing
• Cyanosis - a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and fingernails
• Poor blood circulation
Many congenital heart defects cause few or no signs and symptoms. They are often not diagnosed until children are older.
Treatment for children with congenital heart disease can include medicines, catheter procedures, surgery, and even heart transplants. The treatment depends on the type of the defect, how severe it is, and a child's age, size, and general health.
There is no information if Rosario had received treatment for his congenital heart disorder, or knew one was present.
