UFC expands into new Canadian territory; will “Mighty Mouse” feature?

The UFC will be continuing their expansion in Canada as Winnipeg will host an event in June, Sportnet’s “Showdown” Joe Ferraro confirmed via Twitter. However, there are no scheduled bouts just yet, but flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, who will undergo shoulder surgery on Thursday, is showing some interest in appearing on the card against John Moraga.

“I want to have a full training camp going into a championship fight. This is not a joke, we take this very seriously. That’s why we decided to get the surgery. If things go well, I’m going to push for June 15,” Johnson said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Sportsnet reports that the event will be at the MTS Centre on Saturday, June 15, and that the owners of the building, True North Sports and Entertainment, will hold a press conference on Tuesday to announce “a major sporting event.”

Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley is expected to appear at this event, likely UFC 161, but the UFC is still working out the kinks.

Winnipeg will mark the fifth Canadian city that will host a UFC event.
