UFC 176 is still about three months away, but Zuffa announced yesterday that they have their main event signed. Featherweight champion Jose Aldo will again do battle with Chad Mendes for the title. The duo previously locked horns at UFC142 back in January of 2012 with Aldo scoring an impressive first round knockout.
Since the loss, Mendes has done plenty to get back in the title picture. The Team Alpha Male product has won his last five fights, most recently taking out Nic Lentz in December. Besides the belt, “Money” will also be looking to revenge the only loss on his 18 career pro fight record.
On the other side of the ledger, Aldo has been nothing short of dominant. The Brazilian can make a case as being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world having last lost in 2005. The Nova Uniao product has defended his UFC title six times in that span and has shown very few weaknesses in his game. A convincing victory here and Aldo’s next fight might not come as a featherweight. After dismantling the division, many are clamoring for a matchup with the UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis in a Super Fight.
All the action goes down on August 2nd from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Check out UFC.com for more details and to purchase tickets.
