For those who do not already know, the UFC is set to return to Dallas for the first time since 2009. UFC 171 will take place at the American Airlines Center on March 15 and air live on pay per view. The main event of the night will be a light heavyweight title fight between UFC champion Jon Jones and number one contender Glover Teixeira.
When first announced, there was some speculation that the much anticipated rematch between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and Arlington's Johnny Hendricks could be an option. A fight between Jones and Teixeira, however, will certainly meet the needs of any DFW UFC fan.
Jones is coming off of the biggest battle of his career, a grueling and controversial five round decision over Alexander Gustafsson. Teixeira is on a remarkable twenty-fight win streak but has yet to face a legitimate top 10 UFC ranked fighter during his five-fight win streak in the UFC.
Yesterday, several media outlets including MMAjunkie.com have announced that Thiago Silva is expected to meet Ovince St-Preux at UFC 171 as well. This fight was originally scheduled for UFC Fight Night 35 but has been bumped to UFC 171. Also expected to take place will be a middleweight fight between Ultimate Fighter 17 cast mates Robert McDaniel and Tor Troeng.
In 2009, UFC 103 featured a main event of the returning Vitor Belfort versus Rich Franklin. The attendance for that night was 17,428. A UFC 171 ticket on-sale date has not been announced so stay tuned for ticket information as it becomes available.
