UFC 171 main event changed as a result of St-Pierre walking away

UFC 171, set to take place in Dallas on March 15, has a new main event. With Georges St-Pierre vacating the UFC welterweight title in a media call earlier today, Johny Hendricks will now meet Robbie Lawler for UFC welterweight championship in the main event of UFC 171. The previously scheduled main even of Jon Jones versus Glover Teixeira will now headline UFC 172.

Dallas based fighter Johny Hendricks was defeated by now former champion St-Pierre at UFC 167 in a controversial decision. It was expected that Hendricks would get an immediate rematch with St-Pierre but with St-Pierre stepping down as champion, Hendricks will face red hot contender Robbie Lawler to crown a new champion.

Concerning his expectations for the title fight between Hendricks and Lawler UFC president Dana White said during today's media call “It’ll be an absolute gun fight.”

Lawler has been on fire since returning to the UFC and has won three fights in a row, two by knockout. Before losing to St-Pierre, Hendricks had won six in a row with three wins coming by first round knockout. There is no doubt this fight could turn out to be a great one.

UFC 171 will be held at the American Airlines Center here in Dallas and air live on pay per view. Other fights expected to take place on the card include Hector Lombard versus Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez versus Myles Jury, Thiago Silva versus Ovince St. Preux, Robert McDaniel versus Tor Troeng, and Sean Spencer versus Alex Garcia. More fights are expected to be announced in the weeks to come.
