Houston, Texas will play host to the final fight in the UFC’s Heavyweight trilogy to determine who really is the UFC’s “Biggest Baddest Man”. UFC 166’s main event will feature none other than the former UFC Heavyweight Champion and Brazilian knockout artist, Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos as he takes on the reigning and defending UFC Heavyweight Champion and one of the most gifted heavyweights of all-time in, Cain Valasquez in what will be the deciding fight to see who will wear the greatest title belt in all of sports. Both men have a win over each other, and Saturday night’s fight will surely be one for the ages. Both men are coming in with improved everything and an even greater sense of urgency to claim or reclaim the belt. This fight is already giving me goosebumps and come fight time…the Toyota Center will be electric.
We also get to see the return of crowd favorite, Roy “Big Country” Nelson as he locks up with former Olympic wrestler and one of the Heavyweight division’s top contenders, Daniel “DC” Cormier in a fight that will have the crowd on their feet. Both men have been impressive in their careers and have shown unreal improvements in various parts of their game. With that being said, this fight has led to quite a bit of trash talking, head games and overall competitive edging…that this fight will mesmerize the crowd because everyone loves to see the big boys brawl.
Not to be outdone are the lightweights as former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez will slug it out with the man formerly known as The Nightmare, Diego “The Dream” Sanchez. Both of these men bring a savage pace to their fights with a completely unrelenting attack. They both are vying for another chance at a Lightweight Title fight and both of these men are known for their exhausting wars in the cage….this one will be on fire!!!
Colorado’s own Nate Marqaurdt will face the former Bellator Middleweight Champion, Hector Lombard at
170 lbs. Look for Nate to have the clear advantage as this is his 4th fight at 170 lbs and for Lombard, this will be his first fight at that weight. Anticipate a very technical and explosive fight from these two, since this could leave a very ominous future for the loser of this fight.
Marquardt is coming off a loss to Tareq Saffedine and Lombard is coming off a loss to recently released middleweight gatekeeper, Yushin “Thunder” Okami. Lombard has looked nothing more than average at best since coming to the UFC and Saturday night could spell the hyped up American Top Team fighter.
Look for Marqaurdt to pressure Lombard in all positions to see if the weight cut will be an issue for the heavily muscled Lombard. Nate needs an impressive win to hang around the hallowed grounds of the UFC’s second biggest shark tank at 170 lbs, and another loss could easily spell the end for the Aurora icon.
As for Lombard, a poor performance here will definitely spell the end to his overblown UFC impact, and clearly send him packing to find a new home. If Marqaurdt can avoid leg kicks and staying on the receiving end of the power shots from Lombard, Examiner picks Marqaurdt to blow through Lombard and get himself situated back in the UFC’s welterweight division.
This Examiner will be at The Ugly Dog Sports Café located at 1345 Cortez St Denver, CO 80221. Bob and the Ugly Dog never charge a cover charge to watch the UFC fights and the food is absolutely delicious. Join us there for a great night of UFC fighting and a great crowd.
