The UFC 108 main card surpassed all expectations and produced some very exciting fights. UFC President Dana White was extremely giddy when interviewed by Sherdog.com after the event. Here is a list of results from the main card.
The main card started off with the heavyweights. Former Pride fighter Gilbert Yvel made his UFC debut against up-and-coming contender Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos was able to catch Yvel with an upper cut in the very first round. The blow dropped Yvel and Dos Santos earned his fourth knockout victory in as many UFC fights.
Jim Miller and Duane Ludwig came out swinging in their lightweight contest. Miller, who is more known as a grappler, showed very good stand up abilities. He was able to drop Ludwig with a punch and sank in an armbar submission shortly after the fight went to the ground.
The bout between Joe Lauzon and Sam Stout was named fight of the night. Lauzon was impressive early on with a takedown and kemura attempt. Stout was able to roll out of the kemura however. An elbow from Lauzon bloodied up Stout's forehead a little bit. Stout got the better of the stand up exchanges in the second and third rounds and he was also able to prevent most of Lauzon's takedown attempts. The judges unanimously awarded Stout the decision victory.
Welterweight contenders Dustin Hazelett and Paul Daley had a very short night. Daley won by knockout midway through the first round. Im an interview for Sherdog.com after the event, Daley said he would like to have Thiago Alves as his next opponent.
Rashad Evans went back to his wrestling roots in fighting Thiago Silva. Evans was able to get a number of big takedowns in the first and second rounds. Many of Evan's takedowns resulted in him gaining side-mount position or being in Silva's half-guard. Silva was never able to do much on the ground aside from getting back to his feet. Midway through the third round, Silva landed a number of good punches. Evans looked like he might buckle, but showed good composure in tying up Silva against the cage to prevent a fight-ending blow. Silva mocked Evans late in the third round in an attempt to make Evans engage in more punch trading. Evans played it safe and kept his distance since he had presumably won the first two rounds. The fight went the distance and Evans was awarded the decision victory.
The long awaited fight between Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson could happen around May of this year. The winner of that fight would no doubt be a strong contender for the light heavyweight title.
2010 will also see the UFC debut of Takanori Gomi, the former Pride lightweight champion. Gomi was in attendance at UFC 108. It is doubtful that he would immediately get a title shot against B.J. Penn, but he will probably face a top ten contender such as Kenny Florian sometime this year.
