The pair stood and banged in the middle of the Octagon for the first minute when Volkmann staggered Kampmann with a hard right. Kampmann quickly recovered to return the favor in the next exchange as he showed no ill effects, save for a cut at the outside of the left eye.
Near the midway point of the round, Volkmann stalked but got floored with a right from Kampmann. Volkmann held Kampmann in guard, and then half-guard. But Kampmann landed a couple of big right hands and hammer fists before securing a guillotine from the north-south position for a tapout at 4:03 of the first round.
“I think he caught me with a way too many punches," Kampmann said. "I should not have taken as many punches as that. I was so scared of committing when he was coming in because I knew he was wanting to clench and if I opened up he could get a body lock or something. I’m happy I got the win, maybe submission of the night, I hope.”
