UFC 107 will take place this Saturday, December 12th in Memphis, Tennessee. This should be one of the best UFC events of the year. The main card is stacked with top contenders. Lightweight champion "The Prodigy" BJ Penn defends his title against Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez in the main event. The co-main event fight is former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir against Cheick Kongo. This article presents some general commentary and predictions for the main card fights.

UFC fans in the Huntsville area can check out the action at a number of local restaurants, pool halls, and bars. Bumpers, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Hooters are all on University Drive. Those establishments all tend to attract a number of mma fans for UFC pay per view events. Micky's in downtown Huntsville has a few couches and plenty of tables available from which you can view the fights on their big screen tv. If you know of other local establishments that will be showing the pay per view, then feel free to make comments or suggestions below.

BJ Penn (14-5-1) vs. Diego Sanchez (23-2)

BJ Penn has fought many of the top names in the world of mixed martial arts including Takanori Gomi, Matt Hughes (twice). Renzo Gracie, Georges St. Pierre (twice), and Lyoto Machida (this took place at a  K-1 event in 2005). He has defeated Joe Stevenson, Sean Sherk,  and Kenny Florian who were all widely considered top contenders in the lightweight division at the time of the fights. However, Diego Sanchez just might be his toughest challenge yet in the lightweight division. Sanchez defeated Clay Guida in an epic standup brawl in June to become the number one contender. This is a very even fight and difficult to predict since both fighters have great stand up and ground abilities. However, Diego is probably getting this title shot right at the peek of his maturation as a fighter. Quite frankly, its just Diego's time. Prediction: Sanchez by knockout.

Frank Mir  (12-4) vs. Cheick Kongo (24-5-1)

Frank Mir has an excellent ground game, which is somewhat rare among UFC heavyweights. He also has knockout victories over big names such as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Brandon Vera, and Tim Sylvia. Mir's best chance against Cheick Kongo, however, is to take him down and work submissions. Cheick Kongo is an excellent kickboxer, with a long reach and very heavy hands. The one flaw in Kongo's skills set is that he almost never gets off the ground once he's been taken down. Mir might just try to stand and bang with Kongo in order to gain more validation for his stand up abilities, but if this happens then look for Kongo to land a vicious knockout blow. Prediction: Kongo by a devastating knockout.

Jon Fitch (23-3 1 NC) vs. Mike Pierce (9-2)

Fitch's only loss in almost seven years was to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. With no disrespect to Mike Pierce, this should be business as usual for Fitch as he looks to move back up the welterweight ranks. Prediction: Fitch by submission.

Kenny Florian (13-4) vs. Clay "The Carpenter" Guida (25-7)

This fight will be an interesting clash of styles. Florian uses  Brazilian jiu-jitsu and muay thai as his main styles. He often uses elbows when striking, and tries to finish fights with rear naked choke submissions. Guida is a wrestler with decent stand up abilities. He is also very durable and able to weather a flurry of punishment. This may come down to whichever fighter is able to take the other down more. Prediction: Guida by decision.

Paul Buentello (25-10) vs. Stefan Struve (22-3)

Stefan Struve is only twenty-one years old and already has twenty-five professional mma fights. This match-up against Paul Buentello is a huge test for Struve and will be a great indication of just where he is on the heavyweight ladder at this point in his young career. Buentello has fought many big name fighters over the course of his career such as Dan Severn, Evan Tanner, Ricco Rodriguez, Andrei Arlovski, Tank Abbot, and Gary Goodridge. Its fair to say he is battle-tested. Struve is probably not ready for a heavy hitter of  Buentello's calibur. Prediction: Buentello by knockout.
