George Sotiropoulos defeated Jason Dent at UFC 106 on Saturday.

Here is how it happened:

Sotiropoulos started with a number of combinations and landed a few punches, but none that hurt Dent. The boxing match continued in the middle of the Octagon, with Sotiropoulos getting the better of it through half the round. Sotiropoulos got the first takedown with 2:22 left and 20 seconds later moved into Dent’s half-guard. Sotiropoulos went to standing posture, then passed into side control. Sotiropoulos worked back and forth on the sides, then mounted Dent with a minute left. Sotiropoulos worked the ground and pound, but Dent closed ranks just enough to survive.

The first portion of the second round belonged to Dent, who delivered at least one leg kick that buckled the Aussie. Dent pushed the action for the first 100 seconds, but Sotiropoulos then caught a body kick attempt and threw down Dent on his back. Sotiropoulos worked Wrestling 101 for the next 30 seconds, eventually ending up in side control by the midway point of the round.

Dent shrimped out of side control and backed into the fence to get up, but Sotiropoulos quickly took him back down and mounted. Sotiropoulos spun to take Dent’s back, then transitioned into an arm crush that Dent got out of, only to succumb to an arm bar.

“That’s the way the fight was going,” Sotiropoulos said of the initial stand up. “I didn’t really want to take it out of that phase too soon because that’s what he would have been expecting from me. Most of my victories have come from submissions and I’ve shown my ground game a lot, so people would expect that from me. I was going to work the standup, and it could have gone either way. We could have gone the entire fight standing and eventually progressed to the ground. But I let the fight take its course and eventually got there.

“I went for the arm crush and he was defending it well, so I really cranked the arm crush. But I was holding on to the leg so much that I knew if the grip broke, I would have to let go of the leg and go for the arm bar. But when I did, I was losing control of his body. Once I let go of the leg I had enough time to snag the arm.”
