UDC Firebirds Survive Wild Finish to Stop C.W. Post

Lauren Brittingham scored 23 points and District of Columbia survived a late surge to stop C.W. Post in a key East Coast Conference game at UDC Gymnasium Saturday.

The victory moved the Firebirds (14-3, 5-2 ECC) into sole possession of second place in the conference. It also kept them undefeated at home with an 8-0 mark.

Janelle Junior added 16 points for UDC, while Dohnay Banice chipped in with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.

Behind the efforts of Brittingham, Junior and Banice, the Firebirds took a 38-30 halftime lead. At times, in the second half, the lead ballooned up to 14 points.

Every time the Pioneers (13-6, 5-3), defending ECC tournament champions, made a push, UDC kept the lead to at least 10 points. The Firebirds held a 75-65 lead with 1:15 left in regulation.

Then, C.W. Post found its offensive and defensive rhythm.

Ashley Caggiano made a layup. Nicole Marciniak grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled, putting her on the line for two free shots. Kenyatta Sears then knocked down a three-pointers to make it 75-72 in favor of UDC with 23 seconds remaining.

Sears, however, turned the ball over. So did UDC but with only enough time on the clock for Felician Joyner to hoist up a desperation jumper that was well off the mark.

Caggiano finished with 18 points for the Pioneers, while Joyner had 15 points in the loss.
