UConn's Shabazz Napier has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 26. Napier, a senior 6-1 point guard, leads the Huskies in scoring, rebounding and assists, and his a leading candidate for the John R. Wooden Award, which recognizes the Player of the Year in college basketball.
Last week, Napier led the Huskies to a pair of victories in "The American." The Roxbury, Mass., native averaged a conference-best 26.5 points to go along with a 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. In addition, Napier shot a cool 50 percent from the field (16-for-32), including 46.7 (7-for-15) from beyond the three-point arc. A sniper from the charity stripe, Napier shot 93.3 percent, banging down 14 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Overall, Napier scored 27 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists in a 90-66 Husky win against Temple at the XL Center, and then went on to score 26 points—20 in the second half—to go along with with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots and 3 steals in an 82-71 win at Rutgers.
