In an effort to make live UConn basketball accessible Husky fans beyond Storrs and Hartford, it was announced this morning that two regular-season games—one men's, one women's—will be played this season at the Webster Bank Arena (WBA) in Bridgeport. Located just off exit 27 on I95, the WBA is convenient for fans throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties, including the Housatonic River Valley.
On Sat., Dec. 28, the UConn men will play host to Eastern Washington in Bridgeport. Tip-off for that game will be at 1 p.m. Then, on Sat., Jan. 11, the UConn women will entertain Temple at the WBA. Tip-off will be at noon.
“Fairfield County is home to our Stamford campus and is critical to the University as we continue to grow, achieve our goals, and serve the entire state of Connecticut,” said UConn president Susan Herbst. “We're thrilled to bring UConn basketball to Bridgeport, to enhance our presence in the area, and contribute to the city.”
“This is a historic moment for Huskies basketball and Webster Bank Arena,” added Howard Saffan, president of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, the company that manages the WBA. “We look forward to a long, successful partnership in the years to come. We cannot wait to see the Huskies here in December.”
UConn women's head coach Geno Auriemma has long been a proponent of playing in the Park City. Speaking at a fundraiser in Bridgeport earlier this year, the Hall of Famer noted that “I've made quite a lot of friends during my short visits here... You don't need a passport to get to Bridgeport from Storrs. We've made an awful lot of fans here. They've made our program feel welcome."
Formerly known as the Arena at Harbor Yard, the Webster Bank Arena has a capacity of approximately 9,000 for basketball, and has a rich history with NCAA basketball and hockey. The arena hosted the NCAA Division I Women’s Regional Basketball Championships in 2013 and 2006, as well as first- and second-round games of the 2004, 2008 and 2012. It has also been home for the 2012 NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Championship, as well as the men's and women's MAAC Basketball Tournament in 2007 and 2011. The NCAA East Regional Division I Ice Hockey Championship is slated to return to the facility in 2014. It also serves as home court for the Fairfield University men's and women's basketball teams, for many Sacred Heart University hockey games, and is the home of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. It is also a venue for world class entertainment, such as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus, which will be appearing from Oct. 23-27, Elton John (Nov. 8), TobyMac (Dec. 6) and John Mayer with Phillip Phillips (Dec. 16).
Tickets for both basketball games will go on sale Friday, Oct. 18. For more information, call the Webster Bank Arena box office at (203) 345-2300, or visit www.websterbankarena.com.
