Working through the Environmental Law Clinic at UCLA Law School, students filed "Friend of the Court" briefs in a number of California Supreme Court cases involving the California Environmental Quality Act.
In these briefs, law students argued for broader environmental protections. For example, in the case Save Tara v. City of West Hollywood, a local government waited too long after committing economic resources to a development project before completing and environmental impact review. In this particular case, the Supreme Court agreed with the Clinic's position and required the local government to conduct environmental impact reviews at an earlier stage.
