UCL: Basel Stuns Bayern Munich

BASEL, Switzerland – FC Basel 1893 shocked the European soccer community with a 1-0 victory over German heavyweight Bayern Munich at St. Jakob Park here.  The teams are in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Midfielder Valentin Stocker entered the game as a substitution for Fabian Frei in the 66th minute.  Stocker received a pass from Jacques Zoua in the goal area.  He fired with his left into the center of the net to beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The goal stunned the Germans, who up to that point had controlled the game.  The four time Champions League winners out shot their modest opponents 21-8.  They also maintained 61% possession of the ball.

In this edition of the Champions League, Basel is no stranger to defeating giants.  Their last game was a 2-1 victory over English Premier League champions Manchester United eliminating them from the knock out stage of this year’s tournament.

The return leg is scheduled for next month at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.

Compensation Goal for Marseille

Olympique de Marseille managed a compensation time goal to defeat Italy’s Inter Milan 1-0 at the Stade Velodrome, France.  The tightly contested game appeared to conclude with a scoreless draw when Andre Ayew put one in the net to give the French the victory.

Uruguayan international Diego Forlan and Argentine Esteban Cambiasso were constant on the Milan attack, having several shots on goal but could not concrete.  For the French, Morgan Amalfitano was a constant threat to goalkeeper Julio Cesar.  The Brazilian national team keeper stopped several shots from the Frenchman that could have widened the score.

It was Ayew who would give the French the victory over the Italians.  Three minutes into compensation time, Ayew, who entered as a substitution for Brandao, made a run on a corner set piece.  Ayew jumped, connected with his head and beat Julio Cesar to put the 1993 European champions ahead 1-0.

L’OM takes a one goal advantage to San Siro and will attempt to pass into the quarterfinals on the grounds of the Nerazurri next month.
