The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy in partnership with Westminster College will present its fourth lecture in the 2012-2013 Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price Lecture Series on Tuesday, January 15. The Council will feature renowned author Ioan Grillo who will discuss his book El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency with a first-hand look into the dark, dangerous and mysterious world of Mexican drug cartels.
Grillo has witnessed the growth of power of Mexico’s violent drug lords and their recruits in the country’s economy and every day life. He maintains, “El Narco is not a gang; it is a movement and an industry drawing in hundreds of thousands from bullet-ridden barrios to marijuana-growing mountains.” Grillo believes these cartels “have transformed into a criminal insurgency that threatens the nation’s democracy and spirals into the United States.” He has witnessed everything from drug seizures and mafia hits to military operations designed to stop El Narco.
A native of Great Britain, Grillo has been reporting, producing documentaries, and writing about Latin America since 2001. He has worked for many widely respected television and news organizations including CNN, PBS, Reuters, Al Jazeera English, and the UK’s Channel 4. He is currently a correspondent for TIME magazine, and lives in Mexico City.
UCCD’s lecture series is free and open to the public. Mr. Grillo’s lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, January 15 at 7 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall, found in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory at Westminster College, 1840 South 1300 East in Salt Lake City.
